From authority to collaboration
We are told that during centuries Leadership has shifted from authoritarian models to collaborative approaches, however, in my analysis and from my perspective, effective leaders adapt their style to the context, people, and goals—a concept I refer to as “situational leadership.”
My experience in diverse environments, such as M&A and corporate restructuring, has underscored the importance of flexibility in sustainable leadership. Here some personal considerations.
Autonomy and engagement
To foster autonomy and engagement, I advocate for an inclusive approach:
- Open dialogue: Encouraging exchanges at all levels.
- Direct feedback: Providing insights and strengthening belonging.
- Collaboration: Valuing every voice to reduce conflicts and enhance cohesion.
Directive Leadership: the Exception
While directive leadership may still be relevant in specific contexts like firefighting or the military, modern environments demand adaptable and inspiring leaders.
Diversify to innovate
Diversity remains a major asset for innovation. My international journey has taught me:
- Curiosity is essential to embrace diversity.
- Active Listening turns differences into opportunities.
- Customer Experience must be personalized across generations.
Diversity & Decision-Making
Diversity can complicate decision-making but also prevents mistakes. Establishing a clear framework and decentralizing decisions fosters buy-in and adaptability.
Purpose, Ethics, and Responsibility
These values are inseparable from leadership, translating into:
- Consistency between words and actions.
- Continuous Improvement for employees, customers, and the environment.
- Balance between economic performance and social impact.
Economic Performance & Social Impact
Every economic activity has a social impact. The goal is to ensure this impact is positive for all stakeholders: employees, customers, and the environment.
The Leadership of Tomorrow
Future leaders must balance financial performance with embodied values. Employees and customers will no longer tolerate inconsistencies between communication and action; my advise for future leaders is simple and to young leaders, to thrive, I recommend:
- Stay curious and open-minded.
- Experiment and learn continuously.
- Choose an environment aligned with your values.
- Surround yourself with people who challenge and complement you.
- Maintain balance (mens sana in corpore sano).
In conclusion, I believe that Leadership of tomorrow will be collaborative, inclusive, and responsible.
It’s up to us to embody it.
